4 Things You Can Do To Keep Ants Out Of Your Home | San Joaquin Pest ControlAnts are tiny, but that doesn’t that make them any less of a problem. In fact, seeing the huge amount of tiny little creatures infest your home can be incredibly alarming. They can be tough to deal with, and although there are sprays and traps you can buy or even DIY traps you can make at home, the best way of dealing with ants is by making changes in your home. Figuring out the source of your problem and making a change to remedy it can help prevent more ants from making their way into your home and causing damage. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your home is not an ant-friendly environment.

Keep Plants At A Distance

Something you might not realizing is making your house more ant friendly is the amount of plant life outside your walls. If you have bushes or plants outside, they might be the source of your ant problem. Ants make homes out of plants and oftentimes if bushes or plants touch your home’s exterior walls, ants can use branches to make their way indoors. Make sure your plants are about a foot away from your windows and walls so that ants and other pests can’t use them as bridges to your home.

Store Food Correctly

As is the case with most pests, the most likely reason you have an ant problem is their search for food. Having an ant infestation can be so frustrating, especially if they make their way into your kitchen and contaminate your food. Make sure all of your foods are stored in airtight containers. Be especially cautious with sugary foods and dry goods. Make a habit of putting ingredients away as soon as you’re finished using them. Try to isolate food to one or two rooms, such as the kitchen and dining room.

Clean Messes Right Away

Leaving dishes in the sink can be tempting, especially after a filling meal that leaves you in the mood to nap. It’s not a good idea to put your dishes off for very long, though. Especially if you’ve dealt with ants in the past, leaving any mess for a long period of time is all it takes to attract ants. Clean up any spills or crumbs as soon as they hit the floor or counter. Wipe down all surfaces at least once a day. These methods don’t take very long, and are a great way to let ants know that there isn’t any food for them in your home.

Seal Up Entrances

Ants don’t need much to get into your home. A crack in your wall, or a small space in between your door and door jam can be enough to let in thousands of ants. Take some time to inspect your house for entry ways that might be letting them in. If you see a line of ants, follow them to the source and try to see what they’re using to get inside. Look for any cracks gaps or holes in your walls, and fill them in with caulking if you can.
