4 Winter Tips That Help To Avoid Spring Pests | San Joaquin Pest ControlSome houses tend to attract more bugs than others. That’s just the way it goes. This can be due to location, internal temperature, foot traffic... many different things. If you know your home is one of those that has a consistent pest issue you need to be prepared. There are a few things you can do to help your home be less attractive to pests. Especially around this time of year when spring is close by, and pest activity is going to start picking up soon, it’s important to take whatever measures you can to avoid letting your house become an attractive home for pests this year. Here is a list of things to try this winter before spring ramps up.

Deep Cleaning

One of the best things anyone can do to avoid pests in any building is clean. Pests in general like clutter, so if you have an area in your house that is especially messy, such as a garage or basement, you’ll want to take the time to clean it out. Keep as many things up off the floor and on a shelf as you can. Take out all trash at least once a day, even if it’s not full yet. Wipe down all surfaces and mop or vacuum often. Although a clean home doesn’t guarantee you won’t ever have a pest infestation, the cleaner your home is, the less likely you are to get hit with an infestation.

Changing Habits

Some of the things you or your family do might actually attract pests. If you have a pet, it’s likely that you leave a bowl of food out in the open for the pet to eat from whenever they’d like. This is a major attractor of pests. Instead, implement a feeding schedule and store the bowl away as soon as your pet is finished. Make a new habit out of wiping down countertops and surfaces as soon as you use them. Keep all food isolated to the kitchen and dining room, and out of the bedroom so that it’s easier to eliminate all crumbs and spills.

Closing Access Points

If you have pest problems, they must be getting in somehow. Take a caulking gun and look around your house to find out how. Any cracks, gaps or holes should be filled with caulking immediately. Even if the hole seems tiny, pests can make their way through. Check your doors and windows. Make sure that they fit securely into their frames. Any gaps between the door and it’s frame is like an open door for pests.

Professional Inspection

The absolute best thing you can do for your home to avoid an infestation is hire a professional pest control company to do routine inspections. This will allow the pest control tech to take a look at your home and make sure there aren’t any aspects that might lead to a problem. It also allows them to spot any signs of an infestation and fix the issue before it becomes a huge problem.
