So really, there are only two different levels of pest control we’re dealing with. If you can handle the pest problem on your own and are brave enough to try it, then go for it. It’s always a great feeling to be able to do it yourself, and minor pest problems can usually be dealt with fairly simply. But if it’s a major pest infestation, that’s a level you don’t want to encounter on your own.
There are also certain pest problems that are more common and easier to handle on your own. For instance, ants are fairly harmless to humans and an ant infestation can be managed with better cleaning habits and proper food storage. Just by doing those two things, you can basically eliminate the presence of ants indoors.
However, other pests are nearly impossible to exterminate on your own. Bed bugs are very problematic, since they are so small and can use carpeting to travel throughout the home. Termites are also tough, since they can be hard to reach. Only a full structural fumigation is guaranteed to rid your home of a termite infestation.
The size of an infestation plays a major role in your ability to fight it. When any pest infestation has grown too large, it’s probably too difficult for you to exterminate on your own – pests reproduce rapidly and are masters at hiding, so you will have trouble tracking down every last pest.
And again, certain pests provide greater difficulties. A widespread termite infestation is basically impossible to stop on your own (unless you want to burn down your house). A fully established hornets’ nest is also dicey; the nest will have to be destroyed, and if you don’t finish the job quickly, you could find yourself attacked by some pretty angry hornets. It’s much safer to just let a professional pest control company handle it.
