Dealing with a bed bug problem is always a hassle, but the severity of that hassle can vary wildly. For instance, if a bed bug problem is discovered immediately, removing the problem can be as simple as washing all of your linens in hot water. But what if the bed bug infestation has become widespread? That’s a nightmare scenario, because your only reliable option will be a structural fumigation. That will require leaving your home for multiple days, relocating your family and paying a bunch of money. Doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?
So how can you tell the severity of your bed bug problem? Here are four steps for making a determination:
Step 1: Create a timeline
When was the first time you noticed bed bug bites? Or the first time you noticed the bed bugs themselves? Whichever you spotted first is what we’re concerned with. We want to establish how long the bed bugs have been present. If it’s only been a day or two since someone noticed bites, you’re probably in good shape. But if this has been going on for a while, the problem could be widespread.
Step 2: Investigate the bedrooms in question
Let’s head toward the rooms where people have been bitten. You’ll want to inspect the linens, box spring, mattress, headboard and nightstand for signs of these little critters. You can look for bed bug droppings, which are usually rust-colored and resembling ground pepper. Or you might even spot the insects themselves, which look like this. Handsome devils, aren’t they?
Step 3: Search for other hidden pests throughout the home
By now you should be getting a good idea about the size of your bed bug infestation. If bed bugs or their droppings were prevalent throughout the linens you expected, there’s a solid chance your infestation is widespread. So now we want to evaluate the extent of the infestation by inspecting other parts of the home.
Any furniture with upholstery could be lousy with bed bugs, as can clothing, carpets and rugs. So be thorough. Check the entire home and leave no piece of furniture uninspected.
Step 4: Make a determination and/or contact a professional pest control company
Now it’s decision time. We’ve examined the most likely spots for bed bugs, and if you’ve found a significant amount, it’s time to call in professional help. But even if the infestation is small, it behooves you to hire a pest control company to perform their own inspection. Only they have the expertise necessary to make an accurate determination.
Either way, now is the time to make your move. If you plan on dealing with this alone, start removing linens and purchase pesticide to treat items that can’t be washed. Otherwise, give us a call so we can kick those bed bugs right out.
