There are some things we hate to see go away with the warm weather. Weekends at the pool, summer vacations, and a temporary break from the busyness of the school year all fade away as summer turns into fall. But there is one thing that people are universally happy to see go away with the warm weather-mosquitos! As the weather cools we get a reprieve from these annoying-and potentially dangerous-pests. It would be nice to get a break from more than one type of pest with the changing season. Do all pests go away with the warm weather? It is a legitimate question to ask because there does seem to be a significant change in pest activity once it starts to cool down.

Migration, hibernation, and diapause

Nature responds to the changing seasons in a variety of ways. Things seem to slow down as cooler weather moves in. Some species of birds and butterflies migrate to warmer climates. Certain types of mammals enter hibernation to wait out the winter. Some pests go into a state similar to hibernation called diapause. It is sometimes compared to suspended animation. Pests basically reduce their daily activity to only what is essential for sustaining life. This allows them to overwinter without using up all of their available energy. Some mosquitos use this method through the cooler months. Mosquito larvae can spend the cool months like this and then continue their development once spring returns. In the case of diapause, the pests are still around but are not active enough to cause you problems.

No change

Some pests do not respond to the cooler weather with a change in activity level. These types of pests are the ones that spend their lives indoors in a controlled environment (aka your house). The availability of food and water coupled with a temperature controlled environment makes it easy for pests to continue with their normal activity level. Roaches and rodents are examples of pests that will continue to hang out in your house through the winter. They are not going anywhere as long as their needs are being met. Even if you see less of them during the winter it is likely that they are still scurrying around in the shadows.

It is a sad fact that many types of pests remain nearby even as cooler weather approaches. No need to spend a lot of energy mourning the fact that combating pest infestations is a constant.
