Four Surprising Habits That Are Contributing to Your Pest Problems

When it comes to avoiding pest problems, you already know many of the basics: Don’t leave leftovers out on the table, store your food in airtight containers, etc. These are pretty obvious. But what about some of the more subtle causes of pest problems? Which of your seemingly benign activities is contributing to your pest issues? Here are four possibilities:

Eating in your bedroom

Look, I love a midnight snack as much as the next guy, and I’ll admit to sneaking a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my room from time to time, but that’s a very bad habit that can easily contribute to pest problems. When you eat in your room, you run the risk of leaving crumbs and food particles around – and just how often do you vacuum the floor in there? Food particles are like a dinner bell to pests.

Leaving firewood or other lumber in the backyard

I know you don’t want piles of wood in your home, but you should at least consider the garage. Because otherwise, termites might stumble upon your pile of wood and set up a nest nearby. And when termites are in such close proximity to your home, it’s only a matter of time before some start to wander over to the house.

Having a cluttered garage

As somewhat of a “pack rat,” I understand how difficult it can be to throw some things away. However, when your garage is littered with boxes and other junk (like piles of newspapers), it affords many places for pests to hide. Pests love dark, secluded areas, and you are creating a haven for rodents and cockroaches with all that clutter.

Failing to provide adequate weather stripping for doors/windows

Weather stripping is a must for any homeowner, because it provides many benefits. Its intended uses are to prevent cold air from entering in the winter, and to keep cold air in during the summer. But it also provides excellent defense against pests. Without tight seals around your doors and windows, pests of all types can enter, including ants, cockroaches and spiders.
