How to Determine the Level of Pest Control Your Home Needs

When trying to figure out what level of pest control our home needs, we’re usually trying to determine one thing: do we need to pay someone to deal with this? DIY (Do-It-Yourself) methods are popular not only because they allow us to be productive, but also because they can save us quite a bit of money.

While many pest problems can be dealt with on your own, sometimes you simply need a professional touch to make your home pest free once more. If you’re dealing with a pest problem and aren’t sure if you need to call in reinforcements, we can help you figure it out.

  • Consideration 1: The Type of Pest You’re Dealing With

Some pests are easier to remove than others. If you have a mouse problem, setting up mouse traps around the house is usually sufficient. However, if you leave near undeveloped lots or grassy fields, you may be killing an endless supply of mice. Minor ant, cockroach and spider problems can also be dealt with alone.

However, certain pests aren’t worth the trouble of handling yourself. Bed bugs, for example, are notoriously difficult to exterminate. Termites should also be handled by professionals, especially if you have a full-blown infestation.

  • Consideration 2: The Level of Infestation

Speaking of full-blown infestations, pretty much all of those should be handled by pest control companies. Regardless of the type of pest, if the problem has become widespread throughout your entire home, there may simply be too many critters for you to deal with.

For example, a total termite infestation is impossible to eradicate with spot treatments – only a structural fumigation will do the job. For other widespread pest problems, fumigations or other professional pest control techniques are the fastest, most efficient and surest way to solve the problem.

  • Consideration 3: The Amount of Time You Have to Dedicate to the Problem

There’s another important P-word to consider when dealing with pest problems: persistence. In order to eliminate pests on your own, you have to be very persistent. For instance, an ant problem requires you to seal up all exposed food in airtight containers, and you’ll have to keep your kitchen immaculately clean – ants will descend upon exposed food in minutes. And a pest problem is never eliminated when you think it is; you’ll be dealing with remnants of the infestation for days or even weeks.

If you don’t have the time or patience to devote to this quest, then a pest control company is definitely your best option.
