How To Make A DIY Fruit Fly Trap

How To Make A DIY Fruit Fly Trap | San Joaquin Pest ControlFruit flies are very annoying. They can be persistent and tough to get rid of.  Not only can they be obnoxious, they can be harmful. These pests can spread disease and contaminate your food. If you have been dealing with fruit flies in your home, you are likely desperate to get rid of them. The good news is with a few items that you already have on hand, you can create a fruit fly trap that should eliminate your problem.

DIY pest control is not always the best way to go. Many pests can be too persistent, quick or even dangerous to get rid of on your own. Fruit flies are not very dangerous, so trying a DIY method to get rid of them is okay.

The first thing you will need to do is gather the items needed to create your trap. There are a lot of different ways to catch fruit flies. This method is the easiest we’ve found, with the most readily available items. What you will need is:

  • a glass or jar (Make sure your glass or jar is relatively tall and thin)
  • tape
  • a sheet of paper
  • apple cider vinegar, fruit, or wine.

Roll the paper into a funnel or cone shape. You will need to leave a half-inch opening at the bottom of the paper funnel. Check along the rim of the jar to make sure there are no openings. Any small opening can help the fly get out. Insert the paper into the glass. Leave an inch or two between the paper and the glass. Secure the paper funnel with the tape.

Now you have created the jar and funnel, you can add the bait. Remove the funnel from the glass and put your vinegar, wine, or fruit into the bottom of the glass. After this, replace the funnel in the glass.

Leave the trap in a spot where it will be exposed to many flies. Try placing one on the sill of your window, in your kitchen near the trashcan, or anywhere else flies congregate.  The goal is for flies to enter the jar after being enticed by the contents inside, where they will become trapped. Leave the jar out on your counter until you are satisfied that your fruit fly issue has been eliminated completely.

If you’ve tried the fruit fly trap and feel like the issue hasn’t been completely taken care of, or you’re dealing with an issue so bad that you can’t wait for this method to work, consider calling in a professional pest control technician to deal with the infestation. A professional treatment is the quickest and most efficient way to eliminate an infestation of any kind in your home.
