Aren’t mosquitoes annoying? They’re so small, but they can be such a nuisance, especially if you’re trying to spend a nice day outside with your family. They fly right up to you ear and make that loud buzzing noise, and distract you from anything you were enjoying. Not only are they annoying, but mosquitoes feed on blood, so when they actually bite, you can be left with painful, red marks. Mosquitoes can also carry dangerous diseases, since they’re basically flying blood transfusions.
What can you do to get rid of these pests? Well, for one thing you should know that pest control companies can definitely help you get rid of a mosquito problem in your home. We actually hear this question often, since for some reason people don’t treat mosquito problems as serious issues, like they might with a bed bug or termite infestation.
Other than calling a pest control company to help you, you can do a few things to help keep your home free from mosquitoes. Follow these tips to prevent your home from becoming a favorite spot for the local pests.
Seal Your House
One of the most important things you can do to keep any pests away from your house is closing any access point that you might be leaving open for the bugs. If you deal with a lot of pest problems, you probably do your very best to keep your windows and doors closed so that pests can’t get inside. However, if your doors and windows don’t fit snugly into their frames, you might be leaving your house just as vulnerable as you would be if you left the door wide open. Bugs don’t need very much space to get into a house. Make sure your walls don’t have any holes or cracks, and if you spot any, fill them with caulking. Line your windows and doors with weather stripping to close off any spaces in between them and their frames, and patch any holes in your screens as soon as possible.
Fix Any Leaks
Mosquitoes are especially attracted to places with unattended and still water. This can be anything from your swimming pool to a puddle of water in the middle of your lawn. This is because mosquitoes use still water to lay their eggs and breed. If you have a leaky faucet, especially outside, have it repaired right away. You’ll also want to make sure that your lawn is properly draining, since they tend to have puddles of water in them if they aren’t. If you have a pool, just make sure you cover it whenever it’s not in use.
Use Repellants
There are plenty of repellants on the market, but fortunately for those of you dealing with a mosquito issue, there are also natural deterrents that you can purchase. Lemongrass, Citronella, and Lavender are all known to repel mosquitos. You can purchase essential oils online or in health stores, or if you want to be extra proactive, you can plant Lavender or Citronella Geranium in your garden to ward off the pests.
