Prepping Your Home To Be Mosquito-Free

Posted on May 4, 2018 6:00:00 AM by Stephanie Morgan

prepmosquitoSummer comes with a long to-do list for most people. If you’re a parent you’ll probably need to make arrangements for them while they are out of school. This might mean finding childcare, sending them to summer camp, and making sure they don’t lose all the progress they made during the school year. Summer is also a popular time for vacation because of the good weather and the lack of school. If you go on summer vacations, you know that these take a significant amount of planning and preparation as well. One thing you may not have put much thought into as summer approaches is how to prevent a mosquito problem. It is easy to forget about these annoying pests until they start biting. Not only are mosquitos obnoxious but they can also spread nasty germs and dangerous diseases. Although your summer prep list might already be long, tackling your mosquito problem is a good first step, so that you don’t have to deal with them while you’re busy with the rest of your fun plans this season. Here are the three main ways you can make sure your house is mosquito free this summer.

Get some mosquito repellent plants

There are actually some houseplants that can be used to deter mosquitos. Some examples of these types of plants are citronella grass, lavender, catnip, and marigolds. Planting these outside, near the front door can keep mosquitos away so they do not find their way inside your home. The best way of doing this is to create a perimeter around your house. Another way to utilize mosquito repellant plants is to put them in pots around your patio, deck, or barbecue area.

Get rid of standing water

One thing that is almost certain to attract mosquitos is standing water. Mosquitoes need water to survive and breed. They don’t require a large body of water, so be on the lookout for even small puddles. Check flower pots, flower beds, gardens, and bird baths for standing water that could attract mosquitos. You might also want to look around your lawn for signs of poor drainage, since this is also known to attract mosquitos. Getting rid of areas with standing water will go a long way toward preventing a mosquito problem as summer approaches.

Get a professional inspection and treatment

If you’re serious about keeping mosquitos away from your home and family, the best way to do it is by bringing in a pest control company for an inspection and treatment. A pest control professional can inspect your property for areas that provide mosquitoes with cover and harborage. They also know spots to check for standing water that you might not have known to check. You can have your home treated for mosquitos to help take care of a current problem or prevent one from developing. Choose a local company that has experience with mosquitos and ask about your options.

Nothing ruins a nice summer day like annoying and even painful mosquito bites. Use some, or all, of these suggestions to protect your home from a mosquito problem as summer approaches.
