Scanning Your Bakersfield, CA Home for Pest Problems | San Joaquin Pest ControlBakersfield is a booming city in the heart of California, but before the area started to turn into an oil and agricultural hub it was a wide open desert that many pests called home. Once people started to take root in the area, building homes and businesses, the pests were pushed farther out into the desert. This was fine up until the past couple of decades when the town Bakersfield all of the sudden became the 9th largest city in California. With a population around 348,000, homes and businesses have been stretching out in all directions leaving pests with nowhere to go. So now Bakersfield and the surrounding cities are experiencing an increase in pest infestations and most home owners are not prepared.

Do you think your home is infested? Sometimes it can be extremely obvious, but other times it can be pretty hard to tell. Scanning your home is the easiest way to find out if you are experiencing an infestation, but it doesn’t help if you don’t know what to lookout for.

The first sign is the obvious. Do you see any pests while you walk around the interior of your home? While scanning it’s important to remember that pests like to hide. Scan in places where its consistently dark and cool along with areas where there is excess moisture or the presence of food. If you see 1 or 2 small pests (ants, spiders, flies) during your search, then you most likely don’t have an infestation you just need to ensure that you are keeping your doors closed unless they are being used and that you have screens installed on all of your windows. If you saw more than 5 small pests while scanning the interior of your home, then you might have an infestation and you should contact your local Bakersfield pest control company to further examine your home.

Droppings are the most obvious sign of larger pests like mice and rats. The most common hideouts of these larger pests is wherever food is being stored and also cool, dark areas. Because of this, it’s important to clean out either your pantry or food cabinets every other week. By doing so you not only keep things easy to access and up to date, but it will help you make scanning for pests a lot easier.

While scanning don’t forget to look along your walls and floors for signs of termites. These signs can be anything from small holes in your walls to sagging floors and even droppings that look like sawdust. Termites can cause major damage to your home before you can even see the effects, so its important to contact a termite specialist immediately if you think your home might be showing signs of an infestation.

Scanning outdoors is a whole other story because of course you’re going to see some common pests during your search. The first thing you need to understand is that not all pests should be exterminated because most play important roles in keeping your yard looking fantastic. But pests like rats, mice, and wasps play no such role. Common signs of rodents’ outdoors are damaged plants and grass along with droppings. Wasps are sometimes hard to find, but their most common nesting spots are in cool areas that have constant shade.

Bakersfield is a growing city and because of this the pest problems are only going to get worse. Make sure you scan your home at least once a month to ensure your home is pest free all year round.
