SPRING IS COMING – DO THESE 4 THINGS TO PREVENT PEST PROBLEMS

SPRING IS COMING – DO THESE 4 THINGS TO PREVENT PEST PROBLEMS | San Joaquin Pest ControlSpring is in the air…the trees are blooming, birds are singing, and temperatures are on the rise. Unfortunately, this long-awaited change of seasons often brings a barrage of pest problems along with it. The good news is that you’re probably ready to get up and get moving after the winter months, so here are 4 things you can do to prevent pest problems this spring:

1. Clean Up the Yard

This probably goes without saying, as spring brings your yard back to life – it’s not much fun to try enjoying the weather in a yard that feels like a jungle. But beyond the curb appeal it will give your property, cleaning up the yard will go a long way to prevent pest problems this spring. Cut off bridges of access for little critters by trimming branches and bushes that are touching the edge of your home. Pests love a nice, stagnant pool of water, so keep grass mowed to the proper height to allow plenty of sunlight through to dry up those wet patches after a spring rain. Check toys and other items around the yard after it rains to make sure water isn’t pooling on surfaces – the last thing you want is a swarm of mosquitoes taking over your first cookout of the season.

2. Seal Access Points

Perform a thorough inspection of your home’s exterior, paying careful attention to cracks, pinholes, and entry points of cables and pipes. Pests can easily slip through the smallest of holes, so grab some caulk and start sealing! Check the weatherstripping on doors, install door sweeps as needed, and be sure windows are properly sealed – you’ll keep the bugs at bay and, as a bonus, will probably save a nice chunk of change on your utility bills.

3. Check the Plumbing

Roaches and other pests are always on the lookout for moist, warm places to take up residence. Eliminate a source of water and comfort for them by keeping your plumbing in tip-top shape - check regularly under sinks and around plumbing fixtures for leaks, making repairs as needed.

4. Spring Clean

Predictable as this one may be, it’s true – spring cleaning is a must. Cleaning any time of the year is important when it comes to keeping a healthy, pest-free home, but it’s extra-important after a long winter full of crumbly cookies, pies, and other delicious treats. Spring cleaning is more than a clean to freshen the home up – it’s about finding those sprinkles that have been hiding behind the fruit basket since the kids spilled the whole bottle while decorating the cookies...It’s catching that sticky smudge of sweet potato casserole that somehow flew out and adhered to the base of the kitchen cabinet when you were mashing away…Pests love when there are leftovers just waiting for them in the kitchen and untouched, dusty corners to hide in throughout the house – so do a deep clean and remove the appeal for pests.

Let the change of season inspire you to make some changes around the house. A tidy yard, well-maintained property, and a freshly-cleaned home will not just feel great when you pull in the driveway – it will prevent pest problems this spring. If you’ve done your part to prevent pests and they’re still actively invading your home and yard, it’s time to seek professional help.
