Tips for Keeping Spiders Out of Your House

Written by Stephanie Morgan | Oct 22, 2018 1:00:00 PM

Is the fear of spiders a logical fear? There are plenty of people who are completely terrified of these eight legged creatures. Perhaps you are one of them? The reality is that there are only a few types of spiders that pose any real risk to humans as far as bites go. The black widow and the brown recluse are the most well-known venomous spiders.

All the research shows that your likelihood of being bitten by a dangerous spider, or any other type of spider, is very low. But, having this type of knowledge is not always enough to assuage a long held fear of spiders. Even if you can mitigate your fear it does not mean that you want to share your home with spiders. Follow the steps below to help keep spiders out of your house.

Get rid of other bugs

Spiders can be helpful when it comes to dealing with other types of bugs around your house. They feed on bugs that can be a nuisance outside your home and that you definitely do not want inside your home. The utility of spiders to get rid of other types of bugs is probably not enough for you to tolerate having them in your home. One tip for keeping spiders out is to deal with their food supply, namely, other bugs. Keeping other types of bugs out of your house will make it more difficult for spiders to find the food they need to survive.

Seal up entry points to your house

Make it difficult for spiders to find a way into your house by sealing up any obvious entry points. Damaged weather stripping around doors and windows can leave room for spiders to squeeze in. Shrinking caulk can also lead to openings that are big enough for pests to fit through. Problems around your foundation or roofline can lead to the type of damage that leaves your home open to pest infestations. Start by doing a visual inspection of the exterior of your home and address any problems you find. If you suspect there are more potential problem areas but are unsure of how to identify them then have a pest professional come inspect your home.

Bring in professional help

Regularly scheduled pest control services can keep spiders-and other types of pests-out of your house. The reality is that pests are going to continually try and get into your house so you must be diligent in your prevention efforts. When you set your home up to be treated for pests on a regular basis you significantly reduce the likelihood that it will become infested. In addition, the pest control professional knows how to identify the signs of a spider problem in your house. This ability will help him or her tailor their treatment plan to the specific needs of your situation.

Following these tips will significantly reduce your chances of having a spider problem inside your house. Combining all three tips is your best chance at keeping them away long-term.
