Top 4 Concerns of Structural Fumigation | San Joaquin Pest ControlIf you have a pest problem in your home that just can’t seem to be controlled, you may be considering structural fumigation. This is quite a big decision to make, and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Structural fumigation is typically used as a last resort, and it can be very dangerous if not done correctly. Below we will discuss some common concerns of structural fumigation and whether or not they are valid.

Is it Safe?

Structural fumigation can only be performed by certified professionals who have completed extensive training on the complex process. Since  the process requires restricted use pesticides, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has strict regulations in place for the use of sulfuryl fluoride fumigants, which is the most common structural fumigant in the US. Many states have further regulations in place. The certified pest control experts that you use to perform your structural fumigation will use several different pieces of equipment that will ensure that your fumigation is done in a safe manner.

Does it Work?

Structural fumigation is certainly an effective method of pest control. However, it only works for the particular pest that you are targeting. The certified professionals who handle your fumigation will calculate the fumigant dosage based on the pest they are targeting. In order to kill off more than one type of pest, you will need to speak with your pest control expert to determine a plan of attack. As for the guarantee, every pest control company will offer a different warranty.

Will I Have to Remove all of my Belongings?

While certain items will need to be removed from the home or sealed properly, most of your household belongings are perfectly safe to remain as they are. The fumigants used do not leave residue on the items in your home after the treatment is complete. There will be a thorough process of airing out your home and ensuring that it is clear of fumigants. At this point, the items in your home are considered fumigant-free. The only things that must be removed from your home are people, pets, and plants, although it is recommended that food be removed as well. Your fumigation company should provide Nylo Fume bags for you to double bag your food if you wish to leave it inside the home. If they do not provide these bags, the food must be removed from the property.

When Can I Return to My Home?

After the treatment is complete, a clearance device will be used to check for low concentrations of fumigant. Once it has been verified that the level is 1 part per million or less, you and your loved ones, including your pets, will be able to return home. The process typically takes 2-3 days, and you will be cleared to return home soon after it is complete. Speak with the fumigation company that you will use to determine exactly how long you will be out of your home.

Structural fumigation is a big decision, but oftentimes it is the only thing that will truly get the job done. If you have a pest control issue that just won’t go away, contact a local pest control company to find out if structural fumigation is the answer for you.
