The Most Common Spiders Found in Bakersfield Homes

The Most Common Spiders Found in Bakersfield Homes

Spiders are a consistent presence in Bakersfield, and the warm, dry climate of the southern San Joaquin Valley supports several species that homeowners regularly encounter. Our Bakersfield spider control team responds to spider concerns across the metro area throughout the year. Knowing which species are most common and where they tend to establish helps homeowners understand what they are dealing with and when to call for professional service.

Black Widow

The black widow is the species most often cited in Bakersfield, and for good reason. The western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus) is well established across Kern County and is active year-round in the region’s mild climate. Females are identifiable by their shiny black body and the red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen.

Black widows prefer sheltered, undisturbed locations. Common harborage sites include garages, storage sheds, block walls, outdoor furniture with hollow frames, wood piles, utility boxes, and spaces beneath eaves where light rarely reaches. They construct irregular webs low to the ground or in corners and crevices rather than in open spaces. Their venom is medically significant, and bites, while not usually life-threatening to healthy adults, can cause significant pain and symptoms requiring medical attention. Children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised health face greater risk.

For a broader look at spider activity across the Bakersfield area, our post on spider problems in Bakersfield, CA covers the topic in additional detail.

Brown Widow

The brown widow (Latrodectus geometricus) has expanded its presence significantly across Southern and Central California in recent years. It is similar to the black widow in web structure and preferred harborage but is generally tan to brown in coloration with a mottled pattern, and its hourglass marking is typically orange rather than red. Brown widows produce distinctive egg sacs with pointed projections that make them easier to identify than black widow egg sacs.

Brown widow venom is considered less potent than black widow venom, but the species is still venomous, and bites should be treated seriously.

Common House Spider

The common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) is the species behind the majority of the messy, irregular webs found in corners, window frames, and undisturbed areas of garages and basements. It is not medically significant but is a persistent nuisance throughout Bakersfield homes. These spiders reproduce readily indoors and can establish in large numbers in structures with sufficient insect prey available.

Cellar Spider

Cellar spiders, often called daddy longlegs spiders, are recognized by their extremely long, thin legs and small bodies. They build loose, irregular webs in corners, crawl spaces, and undisturbed interior spaces. Like house spiders, they are not medically significant but accumulate in noticeable numbers when conditions favor them.

Desert Recluse

The desert recluse (Loxosceles deserta) is found in arid areas of Kern County and can enter structures from dry, desert-adjacent terrain. It is related to the brown recluse and similarly capable of delivering a necrotic bite, though encounters are less common than with black widows. Desert recluses are flat-bodied, tan to light brown, and typically found in ground-level debris, stored boxes, and undisturbed closets or garages.

Reducing Spider Pressure Around Your Home

Because spiders follow insect populations, controlling the insects they feed on is part of an effective spider management approach. Sealing exterior gaps, reducing harborage in storage areas, and maintaining a treated perimeter through regular service all contribute to lower spider activity over time.

San Joaquin Pest Control provides spider control as part of all our residential service plans, and our technicians include web removal from exterior eaves with each visit. To schedule service or request a free quote, contact us.
