When people ask me to describe Bakersfield, I like to use two words: arid and hot. And since we’re currently in the midst of a four-year drought, which has hit historically bad levels, it’s as warm and dry as ever.
What does the climate have to do with pest control? Well, what kind of weather do you think pests enjoy? Virtually every type of pest will survive and even thrive in this kind of climate, which means there are plenty of pest problems you need to be aware of in Bakersfield.
- The Most Pressing Concern: Mosquitoes
The drought has greatly exacerbated the mosquito problem in California, which might seem nonsensical: after all, mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and the drought has deprived us of sufficient H2O. However, since water conservation has been mandated by the state government, many pools and bird baths are going unfilled – but still have standing, stagnant water within them. That’s all mosquitoes need for their eggs.
With mosquitoes, the greatest concern is West Nile Virus. Although only a fraction of the mosquito population carries the disease, and only 1 percent of sufferers will ever experience serious symptoms, it’s still a risk. If you’re unfortunate enough to contract West Nile, there is small chance you’ll develop a serious neurological condition. Do you really want to take that gamble?
- Other Pests Exist Here in Abundance
Because of the wide open spaces here, there are pests all over the place, such as ants, cockroaches and rodents. Those open fields and dirt parcels provide ample hiding spots for pests, along with room to reproduce.
Since you’ll never be too far from pests, it’s imperative that you take preventative measures. Always keep your kitchen as clean as possible, and store all food properly in airtight containers or your refrigerator. Your doors and windows also need to have tight seals around them, to prevent pests from entering. Finally, you should check the walls and foundation for cracks, and close up any you find with caulking.
