3 Things You Can Do to Prevent Spiders from Getting Inside Your House

While they can be helpful in eradicating other pesky pests, spiders, themselves, are creepy, and can deliver a painful, sometimes harmful, bite if you accidentally get too close. Three ways to keep spiders from coming into your home are:

Eradicate other pests

Spiders will follow their food source, even if that is in your home. Spiders are looking to trap insects such as flies, cockroaches, earwigs, and moths in their webs. If you have a serious infestation of these types of bugs that spiders are on the hunt for, it shouldn't be a surprise when you start to see multiple spiders popping up around your home. Cleaning up your home and making sure old, stinky trash is taken out regularly and stored in a trash can away from your house can help cut down on flies and cockroaches.

Reducing the humidity of your home in specific rooms like the basement, laundry room, and bathroom can keep earwigs and silverfish away so that spiders won’t follow behind, looking to cash in on a tasty meal.

Changing your porch light to an LED bulb can attract less moths because it emits less heat. By using a yellow or red light bulb, you can reduce the amount of flying bugs even more from flying around your porch lights at night because they do not see their colors very easily.

Vacuum up the spiders

If you see a spider in your home, there is no reason to worry. But it could be possible that the spider has already laid eggs in your home. Getting out the vacuum cleaner and thoroughly cleaning the floors and using the hose and attachments to clean under the refrigerator, oven, and laundry machines, as well as in between cushions in the couch can clear away spider webs, and possibly spider egg sacs. A single egg sac can have hundreds of eggs in it waiting to hatch.

Vacuuming your entire home thoroughly can prevent a spider infestation from forming. Always dump out the contents of your vacuum cleaner in a bag and promptly take it to your outdoor trash can.

Clean with spider repelling scents

While spiders are simple creatures searching for water in a hot summer and food to trap in their webs, there are a few types of smells that can keep them from using your home as their hunting grounds. As you wipe down your surfaces after meal preparation and dining, you can use:

  • Citrus

  • Cinnamon

  • Tea-tree oil

  • Lavender oil

To add a refreshing aroma to your home while simultaneously keeping spiders away.
