They come out in a vengeance as soon as you think it is a wonderful idea to sit out on the patio to enjoy the birds chirping and the sun shining. For such a tiny bug, they can be a big problem because of the itchy welts they leave on exposed legs and arms, but also because of the diseases they can spread. It was reported just last fall that West Nile virus and a similar virus called St. Louis encephalitis virus were detected in Tulare County, CA. Both viruses are mosquito-borne illnesses.

Keep these disease carrying bugs off of you and your family by deterring the mosquitoes from stopping by your yard. If the situation is unmanageable, do not hesitate to call a professional to help eradicate the mosquitoes from in and around your home.

Mosquito-borne illnesses

Every year, mosquitoes, who have the potential to carry harmful diseases, bite Tulare County residents. Mosquitoes can pass along diseases such as:

  • Marlia
  • West Nile virus
  • Louis encephalitis virus
  • Dengue fever

Since Tulare County has had cases of West Nile virus in recent years, it is important to point out that according to the CDC, 8 out of 10 who are infected with this disease never develop symptoms. But the symptoms of West Nile can be anything from a headache, to fever, rash, vomiting, and diarrhea. Though your chances are good that you either won’t be bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile virus or won’t have symptoms, it still is not a disease you want to get. Mosquito prevention measures can be taken to keep these bugs away from your home including calling a professional mosquito control service to ensure they never come back.

Basic prevention

When it comes to mosquito prevention, you want to make sure to keep this blood sucking bug off of you and your family, out of your yard, and to stop new mosquitoes from hatching,

Keeping mosquitoes off of you can include a number of different approaches. You can:

  • Use a mosquito repellant spray that has about 25% of Deet in it
  • Use a more natural essential oil like lemon eucalyptus
  • Bathe with a mosquito repelling soap
  • Keep a fan going when sitting outside to prevent mosquitoes from flying

To prevent mosquitoes from coming into your Tulare County yard,

  • Keep an eye out of any standing water in the yard. Be quick to turn over anything that holds water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
  • Planting mosquito repelling plants around your yard can keep the mosquitoes away.
  • Burn citronella candles when you are going to be outside.
  • Hire a professional to treat your yard so that mosquitoes won’t stand a chance.

As the beautiful weather continues to shine, don’t let mosquitoes become a big problem in your Tulare County yard. Call the professionals at San Joaquin Pest Control of Visalia today!
