Bugs are a part of everyday life. No matter where you live, pests can invade your home, sometimes bringing with them messes, dirt, and disease.
Are bugs more active during the springtime? Depending on the climate where you live, the answer is a simple yes. For most people bugs are a fact of life, no matter what time of year it is.Additionally, for a lot of people the springtime means more bug activity, including laying eggs, building homes, and shedding or growing wings.
Which bugs are more active in the spring?
Ants. Ants are one of those pests that are seen all year round. You may find ants in your kitchen after a winter rainstorm. That being said, ants lay most of their eggs in the spring. While you may see them year round, ants are more active in the spring.
Cockroaches. Spring means a lot of things to a lot of people. To cockroaches, spring means more rotting organic matter, and more place to hide, live and eat.
Wasps and hornets. During the spring, wasps and hornets emerge to begin the next generation of flying insects. Leaving their home, they tend to be seen more in the spring because they leave their current hibernation homes to look for places to reproduce.
How to prevent bugs in the spring
While not all bugs are preventable, there are ways we can keep them from taking over our lives.
Keep a tidy kitchen
A clean kitchen and pantry are easy ways to ensure bugs are not attracted to your home. Wipe off countertops and sinks after use. Also, keep your stored food in containers with tight-fitting lids. Ants, cockroaches, and other pests won’t want to infiltrate your kitchen if there’s nothing for them.
Invest in better trash cans
Trash cans and recycling bins are prime locations for bugs. Be sure to keep your trash, recycling, and your compost bins tightly sealed to detour bug infestations.
Rinse bottles and cans before tossing them out.
Additionally, washing your trash bins will help keep the pests away.
Move firewood
If you store firewood near your house, be sure to move it. Firewood is the perfect place for insects like termites to make their home. Help keep termites away from your home by keeping firewood away from any buildings, and preferably off the ground.
