Can Bed Bugs Cause Actual Damage to Your Home?

Can Bed Bugs Cause Actual Damage to Your Home? | San Joaquin Pest ControlThe mere mention of bed bugs can send homeowners into a panic. In fact, the strong aversion that people have to these pests has led savvy homeowners to learn techniques for preventing bed bugs from following them home after vacation. But, why are homeowners making such a big fuss over these tiny bugs? What are bed bugs looking for? Can they cause actual damage to your home or impact its’ value? The answers to these questions may surprise you and will definitely leave you despising these tiny pests more than ever.

Bed bugs are after YOU!

There is one thing that bed bugs are looking for when they invade your home, and that’s you. These tiny pests feed off of the blood of humans under the cover of night. That is the reason they are often found in beds. A sleeping human provides an easy meal for bed bugs especially since they do not jump like fleas or fly like mosquitos. Since they cannot move around as easily as other types of blood-sucking pests bed bugs have to rely on their food source to come to them. This means that there is no amount of cleaning up or decluttering that will magically eradicate bed bugs. They are not drawn to the leftover food you left sitting out or the overflowing trashcan. As long as they have access to you then they will be well-fed.

Bed bugs do not cause physical damage to your home.

There are some pests, such as termites and rodents, which can cause physical damage to your home. Termites eat away at the wood elements of your home which eventually leads to structural damage. Rodents have the ability to eat away at wires and some types of building materials throughout your house. Bed bugs, on the other hand, do not create these types of physical damage. They are not interested in the wood or wires of your home. As mentioned above, they are only interested in the people that reside within your home.

A bed bug infestation can impact the value of your home.

If you have a bed bug problem, it is good news that they do not cause actual damage to your home. But, the fact that they do not physically damage your home does not mean that they do not have an impact on its’ value. In fact, if you hope to sell your home the presence of a bed bug infestation can negatively impact the amount of money potential buyers are willing to pay. It could even prevent your home from selling at all. Bed bugs can scare people off because they are notoriously difficult to eradicate. In order to protect the value of your home you need to deal with a bed bug problem quickly and effectively.

It is a good thing that bed bugs do not do actual damage to your home. But, these pests can negatively impact your comfort level and ability to sleep in your own home. In addition, if you do not deal with an infestation bed bugs can scare potential buyers off when you go to sell your home. Thankfully, there is no reason to continue living with a bed bug infestation and the negative consequences that entails. There are pest control professionals that have the experience, knowledge, and equipment to eradicate your bed bug problem so you can start sleeping soundly once again.
