The Most Common Household Pests in the Central Valley

The Most Common Household Pests in the Central Valley

The Central Valley’s climate—long, hot summers; mild winters; and consistent warmth year-round—supports a wide range of pest species. Homeowners across Tulare, Kings, and Kern counties encounter many of the same core pests, though proximity to agricultural land, irrigation infrastructure, or specific urban conditions can affect what is most active in a given area. Our pest control service plans are built around the species our technicians encounter most consistently across this market.

Ants

Ants are the most frequently reported household pest throughout the region. Argentine ants are widespread across Central California. They form large, interconnected colonies with multiple satellite nests and send foraging trails long distances from the main colony. They enter homes through foundation cracks, gaps around door frames, and openings where utility lines penetrate walls. Odorous house ants are also common and are frequently encountered in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is accessible.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches are the species most often found inside Valley homes, typically concentrated in kitchens and bathrooms where food residue and moisture are present. Oriental cockroaches favor cooler, damper areas such as crawl spaces and garage floors. American cockroaches, which are noticeably larger, are associated with sewer systems and can enter homes through drains. Cockroach infestations are generally more persistent than ant problems because of how quickly populations reproduce and how effectively these insects conceal themselves within walls, appliances, and cabinetry.

Spiders

Several spider species are regularly encountered in Central Valley homes. Black widows are among the most significant due to their venom and their well-established presence in the region. They favor dark, sheltered locations—garages, storage sheds, block walls, wood piles, and covered patio furniture. Brown widows are present as well. Cellar spiders and common house spiders are encountered frequently throughout the year and, while not medically significant, are unwelcome in living areas.

Rodents

Roof rats are the most common rodent in urban and suburban neighborhoods across the Central Valley. Norway rats are more prevalent near agricultural operations and industrial sites. House mice are present throughout the region and can squeeze through openings barely larger than a dime. Rodent activity increases in fall as temperatures drop and outdoor food sources diminish, but pressure from rodents can occur in any season.

Earwigs and Silverfish

Earwigs are common across irrigated areas of the Valley and are frequently found in garden beds, mulched landscaping, and any area with consistent soil moisture. They enter structures through ground-level gaps in door sweeps and foundation openings. Silverfish favor cool, humid interior spaces and are often found in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and areas where paper or fabric materials are stored. Both are nuisance pests, but they can cause material damage when present in large numbers over time.

Consistent Treatment Matters

Most of the pests above respond better to scheduled maintenance service than to one-time treatments. A recurring service program keeps a protective barrier in place and addresses new activity before it develops into a larger problem.
