What Should I Do If I Have a Mosquito Problem?

shutterstock_1060645889The spring sunshine may be beckoning you to get out of the house and enjoy a picnic or stroll around the neighborhood in the warm, fresh air. Unfortunately, other creatures and critters start coming out during the pleasant weather months as well, namely mosquitoes. Few places around the world are excluded from having to deal with the incessant biting of mosquitoes in the morning cool air and evening shade. They can make your arms and legs itch until you give in and go back inside. As spring and summer weather approaches, you may be asking yourself, “What should I do if I have a mosquito problem?” Looking for ways to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in your yard is a great way to suppress the high numbers of mosquitoes.

Preventions

Keeping mosquitoes from being drawn to you and your family can be quite tricky as they can smell when you exhale. Mosquitoes have a very attuned sense of smell and follow the scent of CO2 in your breath. Holding your breath is definitely not an option so introducing other scents into your yard that repel mosquitoes can be the next best thing. Planting mosquito repelling plants around your house and patio can prevent mosquitoes from flying around your home. Flowering plants like:

  • Lavender
  • Marigolds
  • Geraniums
  • Pennyroyal

Or herbs like:

  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Lemon Balm
  • Rosemary

When planning an outdoor barbeque this summer, light a citronella candle to repel those little pests, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space without having to deal with mosquitoes.

Never let standing water remain on your property. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in shallow, calm water. Inspecting your property of any places that hold water and promptly turning over any containers that may fill up with rain or water from sprinklers can help keep your yard from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

For lazy summer evenings lounging on the porch or patio, keep an outdoor fan going to create a breeze. Mosquitoes can’t fly well in the wind and a fan will, at least, keep these little flyers from landing on you when you are outside.

Store bought foggers and sprays

You can purchase over the counter foggers to spray in your shrubs or around the perimeter of your yard. Mosquito repellent sprays can be applied to your skin and clothes and can be highly effective.

Call an experienced professional

If you still have a mosquito problem around your home, don’t take the risk of getting a mosquito borne disease or even an infected bite from scratching. Call a professional to treat your yard for mosquitoes and keep them away. Treatments from a professional pest control company include:

  • Fogging your yard
  • Spraying a barrier spray that actually bonds to plants
  • Treating water features to stop mosquitoes from breeding
