What Types of Pests are Common in the Fall? | San Joaquin Pest Control

There are some types of pests that seem to come and go based on the seasons. For example, you probably associate mosquitos and ants primarily with the summertime. Mosquitos can tolerate a certain level of cold before dying off or becoming dormant. Ants also have a certain threshold for the cold before they head underground for an extended stay.

If mosquitos or ants have been a problem for you during the summer then you are probably happy to hear that you are going to get a reprieve from them as fall and winter approach. Unfortunately, there are some pests that are happy to continue bothering you throughout the fall and into the winter months. Two of the most common pests in the fall are rodents and roaches.

Rodents

Suddenly seeing a rodent scurry across the kitchen floor can strike fear in even the bravest of homeowners. They are larger than other types of pests and can cause real problems. Rodents such as mice and rats are well known for causing damage in homes. They can eat through wiring and even walls, resulting in costly damage. In addition, rodents can destroy your food supply and have the ability to spread dangerous diseases. Unfortunately for homeowners, rodents do not take time off from causing problems during the fall or winter. When rodents have infested a house it means that they have access to the food, water, shelter, and the overall environment they need to survive long term. All the things that keep you cozy and alive throughout the cooler months do the same for the rodents in your house.

Roaches

Roaches are incredibly resilient pests. They have a long history of surviving in seemingly impossible situations. A little bit of cooler weather is not going to deter them from making an appearance in your home during the fall. As with the rodents, your home likely has everything roaches need to survive for an extended period of time. A small leak under a sink and a few overlooked crumbs can provide a roach with plenty of sustenance. You can make it even easier for roaches to get into your house by neglecting some of your home maintenance chores thus providing access into your home.

It would be nice if all pests gave homeowners a break as the weather cools off. Since that is not the reality you must continue protecting your home from certain pests as we move from summer into fall. Understanding what rodents and roaches are attracted to in your home is an important part of prevention. The other part of protecting your home from these common fall pests is to get professional pest control treatments. The ability of these pests to adapt and survive means that it is difficult for most home owners to protect against them without professional help. A qualified pest control professional will have the experience and tools necessary to protect your home from rodents and roaches this fall.
