Reading stories about the rising cost of living in San Francisco always makes my head spin – how could it cost so much just to live somewhere? We don’t have those kinds of problems here in Bakersfield. While San Franciscans will pay thousands of dollars for tiny apartments, you get plenty of breathing room for a fraction of the cost here. And we have crazy amenities here like “pools” and “backyards.”
However, having that outdoor space on your property can be a blessing and a curse. Because when it comes to termite infestations, we often find that it all started in the backyard…
- Deadwood Creates a Live Problem
Termites aren’t very picky about the wood they eat, so if they come across a food source in your yard, they’re likely to capitalize. Storing firewood, old lumber or dead branches in your yard will make an inviting gathering spot for termites. They’ll build a nest nearby and go to town. That won’t harm your home, but it will put a huge group of termites in close proximity. All it takes is a few termites to wander to the home and boom, you’ve got a termite problem.
- What are My Treatment Options?
That depends on the extent of the infestation. If the termite problem is small and/or isolated, you’ve got plenty of options available. You can rely on simple termiticide from a home improvement store, or call in a professional pest control company. The pest company will be able to offer other methods, such as baited traps or heat treatment.
However, if the termite problem is widespread, you won’t be able to use “spot” treatments. There’s just no way to ensure you’ll eradicate every termite that way. So for deep infestations, you’ll need a structural fumigation.
You and your family will have to vacate the home for a few days, while also removing any pets or medicines from the house. The home will then be covered in a large, brightly-colored tent and pumped full of chemicals to kill the termites. Once the home has been aired out and tested for safety, you’re free to reenter your now pest-free home.
